The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (CUEED)
The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) is the first center of its kind in the nation to integrate scholarly works with private capital, government, and non-profit sectors to develop citywide resources and bring renewed economic growth and vitality through urban entrepreneurship. We promote and foster a new generation of urban entrepreneurs who actively seek socially conscious urban renaissance.
As part of our work, we bring together real life issues and innovative solutions born from our ongoing research on socioeconomic development and entrepreneurship. In CUEED, we seek to build strong community and corporate partnerships that support the revitalization of Newark and other urban areas in New Jersey. We concentrate on educating students by providing real world experience in urban entrepreneurship and socioeconomic development and by taking a multidisciplinary approach to research that aids economic policy.
We are based at Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey. We share our university’s public mission and values; in particular, consonant with its vision of “Jersey Roots, Global Reach,” we seek to impact locally on a worldwide basis. We fulfill our mission through our engagement in three areas: research, education, economic development.

The mission of The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development is to build a world-class research-driven, teaching and practitioner-oriented urban entrepreneurship and economic development program that will transform the economy of the City of Newark, New Jersey, and other urban centers; create wealth in urban communities; and be a model for all urban universities.

CUEED’s vision is to be the world’s leading Center for innovative thinking and research on entrepreneurial activity in urban environments. As such, we work across constituencies to create new knowledge and tools that build thriving urban communities.

Dr. Jeffrey Robinson
Dr. Robinson’s research describes how business practices and entrepreneurship can be used to impact societal issues. He is particularly concerned about community and economic development issues for urban metropolitan areas in the United States and abroad. He is the author of books and articles on such topics as social entrepreneurship, African American women in entrepreneurship, and patterns of Black employment. In 2007, he was selected as the recipient of the Aspen Institute’s Social Impact Faculty Pioneer Award for his research, service and teaching activities at the intersection of business and society. In 2011, his course, Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development, was recognized as a model of Innovative Entrepreneurship Education by the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Professor Robinson is the co-editor (with Johanna Mair and Kai Hockerts) of the research volume Social Entrepreneurship (2006), International Perspectives in Social Entrepreneurship (2009) and Values and Opportunities in Social Entrepreneurship (2010) and co-founder of the International Social Entrepreneurship Research Conference. His current research projects cover the areas of high growth African American women entrepreneurs, early stage social entrepreneurship, inner city business development and economic development in western and southern Africa.
Dr. Robinson is a sought after speaker and media commentator appearing on Dateline NBC and NBC Nightly News, PBS, NJN News, NJBIZ, The Star-Ledger and The New York Times. He is the co-author of Black Faces in White Places: 10 Game-Changing Strategies to Achieve Success and Find Greatness with Dr. Randal Pinkett. He has been the keynote speaker at international events and conferences in Shanghai, China; Lagos, Nigeria; Melbourne, Australia, and London, England and has presented his work on six continents.
His research has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, Business & Society, the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, the African Journal of Business and Management, the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.
Jasmine Cordero
Jasmine Cordero is the Managing Director of The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) at Rutgers Business School. As the Managing Director of CUEED, Jasmine combines her commitment to urban renewal and the socio-economic development of urban communities with the experience and training gleaned from work in corporate leadership development to the training and development of entrepreneurs. Jasmine manages the Entrepreneurship Pioneers Initiative (EPI). Under her leadership, EPI has helped over 100 entrepreneurs to sustain and grow their businesses. Prior to her employment at CUEED she worked at Johnson & Johnson Corporate Headquarters developing young talent for leadership roles within the corporation. She received her Masters in Human Resources Management from Rutgers University.
